Inclusion of podcasts as a tool in the delivery of medical education

Abstract

The scope of information technology is on the rise in the field of health care and has started to have a significant impact on the delivery of medical education considering the changing needs of the medical students. Podcasts have been linked with multiple merits as it gives an opportunity for the teacher to enhance their teaching beyond classroom settings in terms of time and place option. As the students can learn as per their convenience, it augments self-directed, lifelong learning, and gives a chance to medical students to refine their knowledge outside college hours. It is always good to record podcasts on those topics which are of practical and clinical significance to the medical students. In conclusion, podcast in medical education is a useful inclusion for enhancing learning among medical students respecting the principles of adult learning. The need of the hour is to have an appropriate match of both conventional teaching–learning methodologies and podcasts, and the overall process of learning can be enhanced by adding a component of assessment.

 Introduction



The scope of information technology is on the rise in the field of health care and has started to have a significant impact on the delivery of medical education considering the changing needs of the medical students.[1] In fact, in order to address the needs of different types of learners and to enhance their attention span, the medical educators have been exploring various tools, and often information technology has come to assist the teachers. These technologies can be broadly categorized as audio, video, computer based, and mixed and depending on the needs of the session can be employed.[1],[2]

 Podcasts in Medical Education



Podcasts refer to a digital audio file which is accessible on a computer or a mobile device for downloading on the internet.[2] As a matter of fact, in less than couple of decades, the podcasts have found immense utility in the fields of nursing dentistry and even in medical training.[2] Even though, podcasts are predominantly audio files, the combination of an audio recording for a session with the video images of a PowerPoint presentation is referred to as a video podcast.[2] Slowly, but steadily, podcasts have gained popularity as they are free and have open access, plus the emergence of coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic has further created ample opportunities for medical colleges to resort to podcasts as a method of teaching–learning amid the ongoing lockdown.

Merits of podcasts

Podcasts have been linked with multiple merits as it gives an opportunity for the teacher to enhance their teaching beyond classroom settings in terms of time and place option.[3] As the students can learn as per their convenience, it augments self-directed, lifelong learning and gives a chance to medical students to refine their knowledge outside college hours.[1],[3] The ability to pause the podcast and replay it till the student understands the concept makes it extremely useful for the learners and makes the entire process student centered, which is the need of the hour. Further, the employment of video podcasts targets both visual and auditory sensors and thus makes the learning deep and effective.[2],[3]

The findings of earlier studies have revealed that podcasts are being preferred by the students when compared with textbooks for learning and also plays a vital role in minimizing the stress and anxiety related to the teaching–learning.[3],[4] We must acknowledge that the students can learn while being involved in other activities, and it has even been reported that the use of podcasts as an educational tool accounts for better knowledge retention.[3],[4] The results of another study reported that incorporation of visual podcasts results in better learning of procedural skills.[5]

Cons and considerations while introducing podcasts

However, we cannot ignore the cons of podcasts including limited interaction between the teacher and students, which in itself can impact the process of learning. Moreover, as there is no mechanism to promote the clarification of queries or measure the level of understanding, the overall learning might be less.[1],[2],[3] Considering the merits and the potential limitations, while planning podcasts in the medical education settings, it is essential to keep the length of the podcast to optimal and not stretch it unnecessarily so that students remain attracted toward the podcast throughout.[2],[4] It is always nice to record the podcast in the form of active discussions, as the learners/listeners enjoy the process.[2] Further, the podcasts should be recorded on those topics which are of practical and clinical significance to the medical students so that they can apply the learned concepts in the clinical practice.[3],[4],[5]

Lessons from the field

At Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth (SBV), Deemed-to-be-University, Puducherry, a Podcast Team has been constituted and is working efficiently to spread the information about the common topics for the well-being of the general population and medical students through six series of monthly podcasts.[6] In order to target medical education, a specific series on SBV education and educators has been initiated and various topics of education of utility to medical students or faculty members are being released periodically.[6]

 Conclusion



Podcast in medical education is a useful inclusion for enhancing learning among medical students respecting the principles of adult learning. The need of the hour is to have an appropriate match of both conventional teaching–learning methodologies and podcasts, and the overall process of learning can be enhanced by adding a component of assessment.
